Firstly, this is obviously an article written with a biased agenda, not a legal document stating only facts. Example:[About a chiropractic marketing ideas ideas]

“He has gained media fame by his outspoken vocal disgust and impatience over natural or non-medical healthcare, including his criticisms of two time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling.”So at least we know what we’re dealing with here, it is certainly not an unbiased report. With regards to the Linus Pauling comment, Dr Barret did not criticise his nobel prize winning work. It is completely possible that scientist who does excellent work can be wrong on some issues (his beliefs about vitamin C curing cancer were conclusively proven to be incorrect in medical trials). The writer is grabbing at any fact possible to make Dr Barrett look incompetent.

Now I’d like to look at what the article actually claims.• “Barrett had filed similar defamation lawsuits against almost 40 people across the country within the past few years and had not won one single one at trial.”
If you look through case notes and read Dr Barrett’s response, it seems that this is because some were settled out of court, the defendant making a retraction and paying costs. Some are also currently in appeal, which is a reasonable argument, as the particular case mentioned in the article was also won on appeal after Dr Barrett won the first lawsuit brought against him.
Additionally, Dr Barrett (and around 30 other defendants) had a case from the same opposing attorney withdrawn and was awarded fees and costs. So we’ve established that there are many court cases going on here from both sides.
• “Barrett also had said that he was a legal expert even though he had no formal legal training.”
This is incorrect. Dr Barrett’s official training includes a correspondence course in American Law and Procedure, LaSalle University from 1966-1968.
• “Barrett also had to concede his ties to the AMA, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Food & Drug Administration (FDA). ”
He has at no point attempted to keep this a secret. You can see all of his affiliations on his website. Ties to these agencies don’t in themselves give him any bias, and they are not financial ties.
• “Barrett is a shill for the medical and pharmaceutical cartels and his bully tactics and unjustified discrediting of leading innovators, scientists and health practitioners should not be tolerated.”
This statement has no proof, it is a biased opinion. If anyone has proof of Barrett being paid to have an opinion please provide it.
And finally the big argument which is always used against Dr Barrett and Quackwatch:
• “Barrett conceded that he was not a Medical Board Certified psychiatrist because he had failed the certification exam”
This part is really important.
Dr. Barrett finished his 3-year psychiatric residency at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia and began practicing back in the 1960s, when Board certification was NOT A REQUIREMENT. New psychiatrists are required to be certified, but many physicians of that era don’t have board certification.Dr Barrett has never been de-licensed (having your license taken away by regulatory authorities) He has been retired since 1993 and has committed no misconduct. So now that I’ve shown evidence for Dr Barrett’s qualifications, I’m going to tell you to disregard them. Dr Barretts credentials are quite irrelevant because he provides references for his research. His claims are backed up by scientific studies.
So please, before you write ‘The Doctor from Quackwatch has been debunked’, don’t just take what biased articles say as fact. Look at the evidence from this side and come to your own conclusion. Admitting that Dr Barrett is a proper doctor who has studied psychology with proper medical qualifications does not automatically mean that you have to believe everything that he believes. It also does not mean that everything he says is automatically correct. Each different therapy must be looked at on its own merits and evidence.
If you want to dispute anything he says, an ad homonym attack on him or his qualifications will get you nowhere.

Cervical Vertigo the mystery illness? Can some one help me?
I suffer from Cervical Vertigo and have been for approximately 10 years. It has gradually got worse over time. I am now constantly dizzy for 24 hrs a day and have been this way for about 2-3 months. I am seeing a Neuro surgeon and had a second MRI & MRA(1st) yesterday to see quote “The vertebral arteries in the neck can be compressed by the vertebrae, or other structures’ unquote. I have severe arthritis in my neck and most parts of my body. Massage to the neck does help but it only barely controls it for a limited and uncertain amount of time. Chiropractic treatment is NOT an option. My neck is to far gone.The Neuro surgeon suggested surgery MAY help but no guarantee. I am sick of living this way as I am always tired, dizzy and feeling down. Does anyone out there suffer from the same problem and had the problem fixed? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time-

I am having the same symptoms (problems) as you are having. I’ve had them over 4 years, but it has not being diagnosed as of yet. The only thing that seems to help me has been Meclizine and 10 mg of Valium periodically. There is also something on the market called Vertigoheel, in which my doctor said seemed to work with one of his patients. I ordered a bottle of it but I am hesitant to try it until I see the specialist at the Mayo clinic. I am also on a low sodium diet and take a daily water pill which also helps lower my blood perssure. As I am answering this, my doctor is in the process of sending me to a specialist at the Mayo clinic in Arizona for further evaluation. (There is also a Mayo clinic in Minnesota and Florida.) I have been to a local neurologist without any help or a real diagnosis. I am also frustrated with this quality of life, but I would recommend getting another opinion before attempting this type of surgery, even though you are, like me, are willing to try anything. As in all surgeries there is no guarantees. Even though this did not answer your question I hope it could help.

There are some very good answers here so I will just say a couple more things.The particular type of stroke that is associated with neck manipulation is caused by a dissecting aneurysm in the vertibral artery. Some of the signs and symptoms of this type of stroke are headache and suboccipital pain, two reasons people visit a chiropractic, so some of the people that have strokes after visiting a DC are already in the process of having that stroke when they walk in. That being said, the risk of a manipulation causing this are roughly 1 in 5.8 million. This number is actually believed to be a high estimate. The chances of gettting a gastrintestinal bleed from an NSAID is something on the order of 1 in 400. I forget the number of people that die per year from NSAIDS, I think it is estimated to be 16,500.
Chiropractors are highly trained to safely perform a neck manipulation. We (or at least I) don’t manipulate every neck that comes into our clinics, even for neck pain. There are many modalities we can use, depending on the signs and symptoms, and responses to initial treatments.
You say physicians don’t “blindly” remove tonsils, but they do “blindly” do many other things.
Example: Patient goes to PCP, “Doc, my back hurts!”
PCP: “Let’s see. You have low back pain. Here is a prescription for flexoril and ibuprofin.”
Next visit: “Doc, my back still hurts!”
PCP: “Hmm, lets send you to physical therapy.”
The patient proceeds to go to physical therapy, who does a full physical therapy examination. He does one session and doesn’t bother to listen to the PT’s advice. This patient here’s about chiropractic from a friend and decides to try it.
“Doc. I am really skeptical about chiropractic, but my friend said it works.” The chiropractic marketing ideas ideas does a full orthopedic and neurological exam, and gives the patient a treatment plan, incuding spinal manipulation. The patient goes once doesn’t come back for a second visit. Instead he goes back to the PCP.
“Doc. Physical therapy didn’t work. I tried chiropractic…”

I am not making fun or putting down medicine, but merely am pointing out that any doctor might blindly do a procedure based on their education. But to generalize us all as “blindly” following the “religion” is ridiculous.
